2009 Record: 10-3 Sun Belt Record: 7-1 2010 Returning Starters: 15: 8 Offense, 6 Defense, Kicker,

Coach: Rick Stockstill (Middle Tennessee and overall: 27-23, 5 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Mike Schultz Defensive Coordinators: Randall McCray

2010 Middle Tennessee Players to Watch: QB Dwight Dasher, RT Mark Fisher, RB D.D. Kyles, WR Garrett Andrews, DE Jamari Lattimore, LB Antwan Davis, CB Rod Isaac, SS Kevin Brown, FS Jeremy Kellem

2010 Middle Tennessee Strengths:
Dasher alone makes the Raiders one of the more explosive offensive teams in the country, and half of the returning starters on offense are In the interior line. The Raiders also are deep at running back.

2010 Middle Tennessee Weaknesses:
Depth could be an issue at wide receiver and on the offensive line, and Brent Bumette’s decision to transfer leaves the Raiders with no experienced backup for Dasher. With four new starters in the front seven, the run-defense could be vulnerable.

2010 Middle Tennessee Offense:

Middle Tennessee has one of the most electrifying offensive players in the country in senior Dwight Dasher, a dual-threat quarterback who ran for a team-high 1,154 yards and threw for 2,789 more in 2009. He ran for 13 touchdowns and threw for 23 against 14 interceptions. With him running the show, the Raiders’ no-huddle approach keeps constant pressure on opposing defensive coordinators. Dasher’s top two receivers, Patrick Honeycutt (37 catches) and Chris McClover (35), are gone, but senior Garrett Andrews, who also had 35 receptions, is back along with junior Sancho McDonald (24 receptions). The concern at wide receiver is depth, and coach Rick Stockstill went to California’s junior college ranks for some immediate help, getting Jamar Brown from Feather River Community College and Tyler Mason from Chabot. But there is no worry about depth at running back. Junior D.D. Kyles returns after rushing for 857 yards, and senior Phillip Tanner will be back from a knee injury that limited him to just two games last year. He had 83 yards on 18 carries before his injury. The interior offensive line is a salty bunch with four starters returning. Mark Fisher is an allconference candidate at right tackle. The Raiders are looking for a new starter at center, where senior Chris Hawkins faces a challenge from junior college transfer Jeremiah Black out of West Hills (Calif.) CC.

2010 Middle Tennessee Defense:

The Red Raiders lose five starters on defense with four of them among the front seven. The losses include Chris McCoy, a first-team all-conference end, and Brandon Perry, who started 13 games at tackle. Returning starters are end Jamari Lattimore, tackle Dwight Smith and linebacker Antwan Davis. Lattimore was second-team All-Sun Belt as a junior last year. Smith came back from a knee injury in spring 2009 to start 12 of 13 games, and Davis had three tackles for loss (one sack) among his 52 stops. Other than Davis, a senior, there is a lot of youth at linebacker, which must replace leading tackler Cam Robinson (113 tackles, five sacks). Potential starter Stephen Roberts is one of three redshirt freshmen competing for time with true sophomore Justin Jones. Senior safeties Kevin Brown (four interceptions) and Jeremy Kellem (three picks) head a secondary that also returns senior Rod Isaac as a starting corner.

2010 Middle Tennessee Special Teams:

Kicker Alan Gendreau was first-team All-Sun Belt and a Lou Groza Award semifinalist in 2009, when he made 18 of 22 field goal attempts. But the Raiders are looking for a new punter. Nathaniel Toulson had one attempt last year and it covered 52 yards. Tanner is the likely primary kick returner, but the punt returner remains to be determined.

2010 Middle Tennessee Predictions:

No question, MTSU has the offensive firepower to win the Sun Belt, and with non-conference opponents like Minnesota and Georgia Tech, the Raiders could get some well-deserved national recognition. The key will be if their defense comes through, especially up front.
