2010 North Carolina Strengths:
Adefense that could have six to seven players picked in the upper half of the 2011 NFL Draft will lead the team. This group not only stopped opponents last season, it scored four times on interception returns and twice on fumble returns.

2010 North Carolina Weaknesses:
The offensive line and most of the wide receivers comprise the youngest part of this team. Although a lot of offensive linemen played last season because of so many injuries, this group has to make some significant progress for Carolina to realize its potential.

2010 North Carolina Offense:

Redshirt freshman Bryn Renner is poised to take the starting quarterback job from fifth-year senior T.J. Yates, who played with the same hesitant style in the spring that plagued him throughout 2009. Renner has a big arm and an attitude that Carolina fans are unaccustomed to seeing. Yates remains the starter on paper, but it might be a matter of time before Renner takes over. While Renner is a potential upgrade, the receivers should be greatly improved from a year ago. Jheranie Boyd is a game-breaker because of his speed. Erik Highsmith exploded onto the scene a year ago with some outstanding catches. Senior Greg Little, who had 62 catches for 724 yards last year, improved throughout last season. Dwight Jones came to Carolina ranked as a fivestar prospect, although he hasn’t looked the part yet. But during the offseason, the junior underwent a change in attitude and began to emulate Little’s work ethic. At 6-4 and with excellent speed, Jones could be a game-breaker this year. Shaun Draughn is the starter at running back after rushing for 567 yards in 2009.

2010 North Carolina Defense:

Carolina has experience, speed and depth across the board·on perhaps the most talented defense in the country. Five key seniors – defensive tackle Marvin Austin, free safety Deunta Williams, cornerback Kendric Burney, linebacker Quan Sturdivant and linebacker Bruce Carter – decided to return rather than exit for an NFL paycheck. And, yet, the headliner is a junior. That would be end Robert Quinn, who had 19 tackles for loss, including 11 sacks, a year ago. He has a great first step and the closing speed of a safety. With the other stars on this defense, it’s going to be hard to put the entire blocking focus on Quinn, which only enhances his chance at having a monster season, Williams and Burney are All-ACC performers who are entering their fourth season as starters. The defense doesn’t just shut teams down; it scores on its own. Carolina leads the ACC with 13 non-offensive touchdowns in the past two seasons, which includes punt and kickoff returns.

2010 North Carolina Special Teams:

Casey Barth is coming off an excellent year in which he made 21 of 25 field-goal attempts. Senior safety Da’Norris Searcy returned punts for the first time since high school last season, and he improved with each game.

2010 North Carolina Predictions:

The Tar Heels will play one of the toughest schedules in the nation, starting with an opener against LSU in Atlanta. To have the kind of season Carolina is hoping to achieve, the Tar Heels will need to avoid the kind of devastating injuries that have hurt the team so much in the past two years. But if the Tar Heels can remain healthy, there is no excuse for not making a serious run at a very special season.
