2009 Record: 11-2 Big 10 Record: 6-2 2010 Returning Starters: 13: 7 Offense, 5 Defense, Kicker

Coach: Joe Paterno (Penn State and overall: 394-129-3, 44 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Galen Hall Defensive Coordinators: Tom Bradley

2010 Penn State Players to Watch: RB Evan Royster, WR Derek Moye, RG Stefen Wisniewski, DT Ollie Ogbu, DE Jack Crawford, LB Bani Gbadyu, CB D’Anton Lynn

2010 Penn State Strengths:
The offense has playmakers in the backfield and at receiver, led by Royster, Moye and Graham Zug, and experience on the line. The defensive line again has size and speed, and the secondary is as deep as it’s been in awhile.

2010 Penn State Weaknesses:
The young quarterbacks, who looked shaky in the spring game, will take awhile to develop. The three new starters at linebacker have to prove they’re as good as the three draft picks they’re replacing. Punting looks like it will be dreadful.

2010 Penn State Offense:

Kevin Newsome, Matt McGloin and Paul Jones are competing for the quarterback job. Only Newsome has completed a pass in a game. Jones, a true freshman who didn’t turn 18 until May threw for the spring game’s only two touchdowns and displayed more poise than Newsome and McGloin, thought to be the two leading candidates. Newsome was a high-profIle recruit who enrolled in January 2009 and served as Daryll Clark’s backup last season, completing 8 of 11 passes for 66 yards and carrying 20 times for 95 yards and two touchdowns. McGloin arrived at Penn State in 2008 as a preferred walk-on, receiving a scholarship before last season. He played in three games, throwing two incomplete passes. Elsewhere, Penn State has a lot of pieces in place, starting with the backfIeld. Evan Royster has back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons and is on pace to become the school’s all-time rushing leader. The receivers are tall, fast and experienced, led by Derek Moye and Graham Zug. They combined for 94 catches, 1,385 yards and 13 touchdowns last season. Three starters return on the reshuffled line: Stefen Wisniewski, Lou Eliades and DeOn’tae Pannell, all of whom have changed positions since early last season.

2010 Penn State Defense:

Devon Still has the task of replacing Jared Odrick, the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year in 2009. Still is one of six new starters on defense. Bani Gbadyu, Nate Stupar and Chris Colasanti are the leading candidates to replace NFL draft picks Sean Lee, Navorro Bowman and Josh Hull. Gbadyu has the most experience. He started the fIrst three games in 2008 before losing the weakside job to Bowman. He also started fIve games on the strong side last year after Lee injured his knee. They will play behind Ollie Ogbu and Still at tackle, and Jack Crawford and Eric Latimore at end. Crawford is on the verge of stardom after he was second on the team last year in tackles for loss and sacks. Ogbu has stuffed the run while playing in Odrick’s shadow. Unsettled before last season, the secondary is nearly set for 2010. Safeties Drew Astorino and Nick Sukay, and cornerback D’Anton Lynn, return as starters. Lynn has the potential to be one of the best corners in the Big Ten.

2010 Penn State Special Teams:

Russell Nye has become the No.1 punter, but has not kicked in a game. Collin Wagner made 15 of 22 field goal attempts last year, but he was 1 for 5 from 40 yards or longer. The Nittany Lions will look to improve after ranking near the bottom of the Big Ten in kickoff and punt returns.

2010 Penn State Predictions:

With the quarterback position unresolved, it will be difficult to win at Alabama, Iowa or Ohio State. The defense will be strong enough to keep Penn State in the top half of the Big Ten, but contending for the title seems a bit out of reach.
