2009 Record: 10-3 Big East Record: 5-2 2010 Returning Starters: 13: 5 Offense, 6 Defense, Kicker, Punter

Coach: Dave Wannstedt (Pittsburgh and overall: 35-26, 5 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Frank Clgnetti, Jr. Defensive Coordinators: Phil Bennett

2010 Pittsburgh Players to Watch: WR Jonathan Baldwin. WR Mike Shanahan, RB Dlon Lewis, DE Greg Romeus, DE Jabaal Sheard, LB Dan Mason

2010 Pittsburgh Strengths:
This is ateam that is molded in the image of Wannstedt, acoach who favors great defense and a strong running game. But as an added bonus, this team has an extremely talented group of receivers as well, so it should be one of the best offensive teams the Panthers have fielded In along time.

2010 Pittsburgh Weaknesses:
The offensive line is thin, with holes to fill. Quarterback Tino Sunseri is a first-year starter and lacks experience. That could be an issue down the stretch in what is sure to be a highly contested conference race.

2010 Pittsburgh Offense:

Dion Lewis rushed for 1,799 yards and 17 touchdowns last season, rewriting most of the school’s record book for freshman running backs. Lewis, who averaged 5.5 yards per carry and 138.4 yards per game, was selected the Big East Offensive Player of the Year. He will be a marked man going into this season, but teams won’t be able to just load up the box. That’s because the Panthers’ receiving corps is as deep and talented as it has ever been. Junior receiver Jonathan Baldwin is one of the most dangerous players in college football. He’s 6-5. He has a 42-inch vertical jump. He runs the 40-yard dash in 4.38 seconds. And after spending his nrst season living on his superior athleticism, last year he became dominant because he learned how to play the position. The Panthers have another 6-5 guy on the other side in sophomore Mike Shanahan. He is athletic, runs great routes and has the best hands on the team. To make it all work, sophomore quarterback Tino Sunseri must continue to progress and make good decisions.

2010 Pittsburgh Defense:

Coach Dave Wannstedt has built the defense with lots of athletic linemen who control games and win by attrition. The line certainly was dominant last year – the Panthers led the nation in sacks (3.62 per game) even though they almost never blitz. Despite the graduation of two starting tackles who were All-Big East players, this unit might actually be better. That’s because the line, which is anchored by NFL-caliber senior defensive ends Greg Romeus (11.5 tackles for loss, eight sacks) and Jabaal Sheard (10.5 tackles for loss, nve sacks), will be deeper than last year. The starters can rest when they need to in order to be effective in the fourth quarter. The linebacker group returns two starters, is deeper and more versatile. Middle linebacker Dan Mason steps into the lineup and has the talent and work ethic to become the next great one in the mold of Scott McKillop, H.B. Blades and Gerald Hayes. Junior cornerbacks Antwuan Reed, Buddy Jackson and Saheed Imoru had excellent springs and should provide an upgrade at that position.

2010 Pittsburgh Special Teams:

Dan Hutchins will again handle punting and placekicking duties. While he doesn’t possess a big-time leg, he is steady and accurate in both regards. Hutchins made 23 of 29 neld goal attempts and averaged 41.1 yards per punt. The return units – also coached by Wannstedt – improved greatly last year. All of the primary returners are back, including sophomore Cameron Saddler, who averaged 25.3 yards per kickoff return.
