2009 Record: 5-7 Big 10 Record: 4-4 2010 Returning Starters: 12: 6 Offense, 5 Defense, Kicker,

Coach: Danny Hope (Purdue: 5-7, 1 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Gary Nord Defensive Coordinators: Donn Landholm, Gary Emanuel

2010 Purdue Players to Watch: QB Robert Marve, WR Keith Smith, WR Cortez Smith, DE Ryan Kerrigan, LB Jason Wemer, LB Joe Holland, DT Kawann Short

2010 Purdue Strengths:
Even though he’s new to Purdue, Marve is an exciting prospect at QB. Smith led the Big Ten in receiving in 2009. Kerrigan is one of the top defensive ends In the country, and Purdue should be solid up front on defense.

2010 Purdue Weaknesses:
Running back is a concern, especially since 2009 starter Ralph Bolden tore his ACL in the spring. Depth at receiver, and inexperience in the offensive line, also could cause problems. With the loss of all four starters, the entire secondary must be rebuilt.

2010 Purdue Offense:

Second-year coach Danny Hope will again be breaking in a new starting quarterback. Last season it was fifth-year senior Joey Elliott. This year, it likely will be Robert Marve, who had to sit out the 2009 season after his transfer from Miami (Fla.) … and he was recovering from knee surgery, anyway. Marve started 11 games as a Miami freshman in 2008, completing 54.5 percent of his passes for 1,293 yards, with nine touchdowns and 13 interceptions. He also ran for 119 yards and two touchdowns. Marve will have an outstanding receiver to throw to in senior Keith Smith, who led the Big Ten in 2009 with 91 catches for 1,100 yards. Depth among the receivers could be an issue. There’s also concern about the running game, with junior Ralph Bolden possibly missing the season because of a torn ACL suffered in the spring. Bolden rushed for 935 yards in 2009. His scheduled replacements are inexperienced. AI-Terek McBurse is a promising prospect who led Purdue with 468 yards on 19 kickoff returns last year as a true freshman, and senior Keith Carlos is new to the position after making the switch from wide receiver in the spring. Tackle Dennis Kelly and guard Ken Plue are returning starters up front, but the rest of the line remains unsettled.

2010 Purdue Defense:

The secondary is a major concern with four new starters. But five players from the front seven returns, which is encouraging since Purdue needs to make drastic improvement in its run defense after finishing last in the Big Ten, allowing 173.4 yards per game on the ground. End Ryan Kerrigan, a second-team All-American last year, is the leader of the defense. He led the Big Ten and ranked third nationally with 13 sacks and ranked fourth in the conference with 18.5 tackles for loss in 2009. All three starting linebackers – Jason Werner, Joe Holland and Chris Carlino – return. Plus, highly regarded sophomore Dwayne Beckford is added to the mix and figures to start in the middle. None of the four probable stalters in the secondary – Charlton Williams, Albert Evans, Josh Johnson and Chris Quinn – has starting experience. And none of the scheduled backups have any game experience.

2010 Purdue Special Teams:

Carson Wiggs, who has been the placekicker the past two seasons and also kicked off last year, could add punting duties to his resume. Wiggs has made 22 of 32 career field goal attempts. He displayed his strong leg by kicking a 53-yarder in 2008 and a school-record 59-yarder last season.

2010 Purdue Predictions:

The spring injury to Ralph Bolden dampened enthusiasm, but at least Robert Marve appears to be the real deal. The inexperienced secondary will have to be a big surprise if the defense, which finished seventh in the Big Ten last year, is going to make any improvement. Overall, it could be a season of treading water.
