2009 Record: 9-4 Big East Record: 3-4 2010 Returning Starters: 14: 6 Offense, 6 Defense, Kicker, Punter

Coach: Greg Schiano (Rutgers and overall: 55-55, 9 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Kirk Ciarrocca, Kyle Flood Defensive Coordinators: Bob Fraser, Ed Pinkham

2010 Rutgers Players to Watch: QB Tom Savage, WR Mohamed Sanu, RB Joe Martinek, DT Scott Vallone, DE Alex Silvestro, DE Jonathan Freeny, LB Steve Beauharnais, SS Joe Lefeged

2010 Rutgers Strengths:
Savage’s freshman year suggested he could be on his way to becoming the most accomplished quarterback in school history. Sanu’s play-making ability as areceiver and runner gives Rutgers aunique weapon. The defense is talented and deep, and It figures to wreak havoc again.

2010 Rutgers Weaknesses:
Nothing scares Rutgers more than the thought of an injury to Savage, since junior backup Steve Shimko has never attempted apass and the third-stringer is true freshman Chas Dodd. There are major concerns about the rebuilt offensive line, too, which lost afirst-round pick.

2010 Rutgers Offense:

After rolling the dice by starting a true freshman at quarterback (Tom Savage) and at wide receiver (Mohamed Sanu) last year, and reaching a bowl, the Scarlet Knights should reap even bigger dividends from both positions this season. Savage threw for 2,211 yards in earning Freshman All-America honors. The versatile Sanu, a wideout with a linebacker’s size and mindset, stamped himself as one of the sport’s rising stars after catching 51 passes for 639 yards and fInishing as the team’s second-leading rusher with 346 yards out of the Wildcat. Sanu’s complementary help likely will come from a group of promising-but-inexperienced receivers that includes Mark Harrison, Tim Wright and Quron Pratt. Tailback Joe Martinek (967 rushing yards) returns but is more of a grind-it-out runner. Rutgers will look to add some big-play punch to its ground game with true freshmen Casey Turner and Jawan Jamison. The key is the rebuilt line, which has to replace three starters. Guard Howard Barbieri has shifted to center to plug a hole there. The tackles will be young.

2010 Rutgers Defense:

A year after Rutgers led the country in tackles for loss and fInished second in turnover margin, there are hints this might be the fastest, most athletic defense in coach Greg Schiano’s 10 years. Sack specialist Jonathan Freeny and steady Alex Silvestro give the Knights two proven ends. Sophomore tackle Scott Vallone earned Freshman All-America honors last year. There’s more depth, size and talent on the D-line than at any point under Schiano’s watch. Sophomore Steve Beauharnais, who made an immediate impact as a late-season starter on the strong side, likely will slide to middle linebacker, with veterans Antonio Lowery and Manny Abreu on the outside. The secondary has to be re-worked a bit but is teeming with good, young talent. Safety Joe Lefeged, a three-year starter, is the leader there. Sophomore Khaseem Greene has shown enough promise to take over at free safety. Schiano redshirted three highly regarded freshmen corners last year, and all fIgure to have an impact now. One, Logan Ryan, will push all year to start.

2010 Rutgers Special Teams:

Rutgers fInished mid-pack in the Big East in kickoff returns and last in punt returns last year, so both areas need to show dramatic improvement. But junior placekicker San San Te is expected to fInally live up to his potential after undergoing offseason back surgery, and senior punter Teddy Dellaganna is one of the league’s best.

2010 Rutgers Predictions:

A sixth straight bowl appearance – yawn – is expected, but fans want Schiano to aim higher in his loth season. Rutgers and South Florida are the only Big East schools yet to win at least a share of the league title. A dream of a Big East crown is possible if the offensive line comes around – a big “if” – and the incoming freshmen give the running game the spark it needs.
