2010 Tennessee Players to Watch: RB Tauren Poole, WR Gerald Jones, TE Luke Stocker, DE Chris Walker, LB Nick Reveiz, FS Janzen Jackson, DT Montori Hughes
2010 Tennessee Strengths:
Adefense that allowed only 22.2 points per game and held Alabama and Florida to 35 combined points has asolid starting lineup. Walker (back) and Revelz (tom ACL) must stay healthy. The Vols have pass-catching targets, led by Jones and Stocker. Poole Is ready for a breakout season.
2010 Tennessee Weaknesses:
The Vols lost all five starters from the offensive line and they’re breaking in anew QB – not acombination for success. The defense lost both starting tackles and has little depth at the position. Four LBs missed all or part of spring ball due to injuries. And the secondary must replace All-American Eric Berry.
2010 Tennessee Offense:
Tennessee’s apparent quarterback in-waiting, Nick Stephens, quit days after he was demoted to third team, leaving junior college transfer Matt Simms and mid-term enrollee Tyler Bray to man the all-important position. Neither showed the consistency in the spring necessary to be an effective SEC quarterback. New head coach Derek Dooley likes to run the pro set and utilize the tight end, but it might be hard to make anything work with the inexperience at quarterback and a line with five new starters. Combined returning starts: three. Simms, Phil’s son, threw three interceptions in the spring game and was 8-for-25 in the preceding scrimmage. Simms has a strong arm and is mobile, but his accuracy and decision-making weren’t good. Bray is tall and has a cannon for an arm. Dooley liked Bray’s poise in the spring game. Tauren Poole emerged as a solid running back, with David Oku also capable. Receiver is the strongest position on offense. Senior Gerald Jones (46 catches last season) has 87 career receptions. He can be used in the Wildcat package or to return punts. Denarius Moore led the team with seven touchdown catches. Tight end Luke Stocker has pro potential.
2010 Tennessee Defense:
New coordinator Justin Wilcox, who came from Boise State, will stay with the 4-3, but might run less of Monte Kiffin’s Tampa Two. Wilcox will use more movement up front to counter a lack of size along the front seven. Tennessee lost four of its top five defenders – including All-American safety Eric Berry and defensive tackle Dan Williams – but returns some quality players. Defensive end Chris Walker is an All-SEC candidate, safety Janzen Jackson made the All-SEC Freshman team and middle linebacker Nick Reveiz, coming off a torn ACL, is a productive player and great leader. Defensive tackle Montori Hughes has more talent than Williams. Marlon Walls, moved from end to tackle last year, had three sacks in the spring game. He’s bulked up to 289 and moves well. Dooley said he’s worried about his depth at defensive tackle. That’s why he moved two ends 253- pound Steven Fowlkes and Rae Sykes – inside. He’s also worried about a lack of size.
2010 Tennessee Special Teams:
Senior Chad Cunningham averaged 42.1 yards per punt, with 12 going at least 50 yards. But he had one blocked and the team net was only 34.3 yards. Kicker Daniel Lincoln lost his job late last season after having two field-goal attempts blocked by Alabama. He suffered through a 10-for-16 season. Signee Michael Palardy, a high school All-American, could win the job.

2010 Tennessee Predictions:
The Vols are facing a major rebuilding job. The talent-level isn’t close to the elite teams in the SEC, and uncertainty along the OL and at QB makes this a dicey situation for a first-year coach with a new system. UT has had just two seven-loss seasons in history and no eight-loss season. There’s a reason we bring this up.
