While the 2010 NCAA college football season does not start for a couple of months it is not too early to take a look at each of the major conferences to see which teams have the best chance to end up in this year’s BCS Championship Game. Today we take a look at all the teams in the Southeastern Conference along with their current odds to win a national title.

SEC East Division

Florida

Florida – Current odds to win a National Championship: 10-1

2009- Overall record 13-1     Conference record 8-0        Home 9-0   Away 4-1

Florida 2010 Outlook – A new era of quarterback begins for the Gators as John Brantley takes over the reins from the departed Tim Tebow. Brantley is a traditional pocket passer with a strong arm and a ton of raw talent. The main question surrounding him will be his ability to step in and lead this team. Four of five starters on the offensive line have returned which should help the transition. On defense they will have CB Ahmad and LB A.J. Jones back, but quite a few new faces in the lineup as well. Florida once again looks like the team to beat in the SEC-East.

Georgia

Georgia - BSC Championship Odds: 35-1

2009- Overall record 8-5     Conference record 4-4         Home 5-2   Away 4-3

Georgia 2010 Outlook – Georgia will turn to redshirt freshman Aaron Murray as their new starting QB with the departure of Joe Cox. He will have the benefit of a strong running game led by Washain Easley and Caleb King, who combined for over 1,300 yards last season. LB’s Daryl Gamble and Marcus Downtin will anchor new defensive coordinator Todd Graham’s 3-4 scheme, but there are some concerns with the secondary that still need to be addressed.

Tennessee

Tennessee - BCS Championship Odds: 100-1

2009- Overall record 7-6     Conference record 4-4         Home 6-3    Away 1-3

Tennessee 2010 Outlook – New Head Coach Derek Dooley, who takes over for Lane Kiffen, will have five starters back from last year’s offense including WR’s Gerald Jones and Denarius Moore. Despite seeing little action the past two seasons, QB Nick Stephens will most likely be the starter. On defense, seven starters return from last year’s team led by CB Dennis Rogan and LB’s Nick Reveiz and Savion Frazer. Adjusting to their third head coach in the last three years could be the Vols biggest challenge heading into this season.

Kentucky

Kentucky - BCS Championship Odds: OFF

2009- Overall record 7-6       Conference record 3-5        Home 3-4   Away 4-2

Kentucky 2010 Outlook – WR Randell Cobb should be the biggest star on this Kentucky’s offense. He led the team with 39 receptions for 447 yards and was second in rushing with 573 yards. Mike Hartline should get the start at quarterback, but Morgan Newton’s performance last season in relief of Hartline, who was out with an injury makes him a viable option as well. The defense’s main focus will be to try and stop the run, which is something they did not do well last season.

South Carolina

South Carolina - BCS Championship Odds: 100-1

2009- Overall record 7-6       Conference record 3-5         Home 6-1     Away 1-5

South Carolina 2010 Outlook – Head coach Steve Spurrier enters his sixth season with perhaps his most talented team yet. South Carolina returns eight starters on offense including QB Stephen Garcia. Last season Garcia threw for 2,862 yards and 17 TD’s. Keep an eye on freshman RB Marcus Lattimore who comes in this year as one of the top prospects in the country. DE Cliff Matthews and LB Shaq Wilson will head up a defense that has seven starters back from last year’s team.

Vanderbilt

Vanderbilt - BCS Championship Odds: OFF

2009- Overall record 2-10      Conference record 0-8         Home 1-5     Away 1-5

Vanderbilt 2010 Outlook – With 12 starters returning from last year’s team, Head Coach Bobby Johnson is counting on the idea that another year of experience will produce better results than last season. The one bright spot is the return of RB’s Warren Norman and Zach Stacy who combined for close to 1,300 yards last season. CB Casey Hayward and S Sean Richardson lead a defense that only allowed an average of 23.3 points per game against a solid schedule of competition.

Alabama

Alabama – BCS Championship Odds: 4-1

2009- Overall record 14-0        Conference record 8-0 (SEC Champions)      Home 9-0    Away 5-0

Alabama 2010 Outlook – The defending National Champions remain loaded on offense with the return of QB Greg McElroy, Heisman Trophy winner RB Mark Ingram, and WR Julio Jones. Don’t’a Hightower will take over for the departed Sergio Kindle and along with DE Marcell Dareus leads a defense that could be just as good as the one last year that only allowed an average of 11 points per game. All the pieces are place for the Crimson Tide to make a strong run at another national title.

LSU

LSU – BCS Championship Odds: 25-1

2009- Overall record 9-4         Conference record 5-3            Home 6-2     Away 3-2

LSU 2010 Outlook – The Tigers’ offense will be led by QB Jordan Jefferson, who passed for 2,166 yards last season. His two favorite targets; WR’s Rueben Randle and Terrence Toliver will be back to help the aerial attack. Led by LB Kelvin Sheppard and CB Patrick Peterson this LSU defense should be as strong and fast as ever making it one of the best in the conference. Head coach Les Miles has enough talent on both sides of the ball to make the Tigers a major factor in the conference this season.

Mississippi

Mississippi - BCS Championship Odds: 80-1

2009- Overall record 9-4             Conference record 4-4           Home 7-1     Away 2-3

Mississippi 2010 Outlook – Head coach Houston Nutt will have his work cut out for him on offense as Ole Miss lost eight starters from last season. While RB Dexter McCluster is gone, they will have Brandon Bolden, who ran for 614 yards last year in addition to McCluster’s 1,169. The Rebels return five starters on defense including linemen Kentrell Lockett, Jerrell Powe, and Lawon Scott. These three will be counted on to lead a very young but talented group of players.

Arkansas

Arkansas – BCS Championship Odds: 35-1

2009- Overall record 8-5              Conference record 3-5             Home 7-1      Away 1-4

Arkansas 2010 Outlook – Head Coach Bobby Petrino should have a good chance to improve their record from last year with 16 starters back for this season. QB Ryan Mallett, who suffered a foot injury this past February, is still expected to be ready to go by opening day. The offensive line remains basically intact and should be the core strength of this unit. The defense will be led by DE Jake Bequette and LB’s Jerry Franklin and Jerico Nelson.

Auburn

Auburn - BCS Championship Odds: 40-1

2009- Overall record 8-5               Conference record 3-5              Home 7-2     Away 1-3

Auburn 2010 Outlook – Based on his performance in the spring, Cameron Newton should be the new starting quarterback for Auburn. WR Darvin Adams, who had 997 yards receiving last season, will be his primary target in the air and RB Onterio McCalebb will carry the load on the ground as the Tigers will look to have a balanced attack on offense. One area where they will have to improve is the 26.9 points per game allowed by the defense. This was the worst in the conference.

Mississippi State

Mississippi State – BCS Championship Odds: 100-1

2009- Overall record 5-7               Conference record 3-5               Home 2-5     Away 3-2

Mississippi State 2010 Outlook – Look for redshirt freshman QB Tyler Russell to be the starter on opening day after impressing the coaching staff in the spring. WR Chad Bumphis and TE Marcus Green would be the primary targets in the passing game and RB Robert Elliott would be the primary runner out of the backfield. The offensive line returns four starters from last year which should help solidify things. With a fairly decent defense, this is the kind of team that is very capable of pulling off a major upset or two along the way.
