2009 Record: 2-10 SEC Record: 0-8 2010 Returning Starters: 12: 7 Offense, 4 Defense, Kicker

Coach: Bobby Johnson (Vanderbilt 29-66, 8 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Jimmy Kiser Defensive Coordinators: Jamie Bryant

2010 Vanderbilt Players to Watch: QB Larry Smith, RB Warren Norman, RB Zac Stacy, RT James Williams, LB Chris Marve, CB Casey Hayward, CB Jamie Graham, SS Sean Richardson

2010 Vanderbilt Strengths:
The defense is aggressive and has more playmakers than usual, which keeps opposing offenses off balance. RB/KR Warren Norman provides big-play potential on offense and special teams. All of the skill positions on offense boast experience, if not big numbers in recent seasons.

2010 Vanderbilt Weaknesses:
Avirtually new offensive line steps in for aunit that struggled last season to protect the quarterback and produce In short-yardage situations. The need for blitzes by the defense leaves it vulnerable to big plays. None of the returnIng wide receivers has been consistently productive.

2010 Vanderbilt Offense:

No doubt, Vanderbilt has the ability to run the ball with sophomores Warren Norman and Zac Stacy, who combined for more than 1,200 yards in 2009. Norman has a knack for quick, decisive cuts that get him through the hole. The question is whether the line can consistently open holes. Four starters and the top reserve from a year ago graduated. Plus, the development of the new unit was stunted when the projected starters at tackle – Ryan Seymour on the left and James Williams on the right – missed spring drills because of injury. Also unknown is whether Larry Smith can throw the ball accurately enough or whether receivers John Cole, Udom Umoh or someone else can get open often enough to make opposing defenses respect the passing game. Smith completed just 46.7 percent of his passes in his first season as a starter; he missed the final three-plus games with a hamstring injury. The receiving corps will get a boost from incoming freshmen, who will get an opportunity if the veterans don’t quickly produce at a higher level.

2010 Vanderbilt Defense:

Vanderbilt does have its share of playmakers on this unit. Cornerback Casey Hayward continues the recent tradition of top talent at this spot, which featured D.J. Moore and Myron Lewis in the past two seasons. Jamie Graham’s athleticism has made him a jack of all trades in recent years, but now he has a steady role at the spot opposite Hayward. Strong safety Sean Richardson is a heavy hitter in the run game. Linebacker Chris Marve makes a lot of tackles – more than 100 in each of the past two years – and has forced seven career fumbles. The line looks to have more than enough depth to overcome the knee injury during spring football that placed in doubt DT Adam Smotherman’s availability for the season. Rob Lohr steps up to start alongside T.J. Greenstone. Defensive ends Teriall Brannon, Theron Kadri and Tim Fugger have started, but were not at the top of the depth chart in 2009.

2010 Vanderbilt Special Teams:

Warren Norman set the freshman conference record for kickoff return yards in a season (1,050) and tied the SEC record for touchdowns on kickoff returns with three. He provides the potential for good starting field position. Ryan Fowler tied the school record for field goals in a season (16). Punter Richard Kent assumes an important role in his first-year on the job for a team that will be forced to punt often.

2010 Vanderbilt Predictions:

Following the heady days of 2008, the Commodores have returned to fighting for respect in the powerful SEC. There are some quality pieces in place, but not enough that this team consistently can overcome errors, injuries and infractions. The best Vanderbilt can hope for is to keep games close and to make plays at the end when it counts, which is just what happened two years ago.
