2009 Record: 10-3 ACC Record: 6-2 2010 Returning Starters: 12: 7 Offense, 5 Defense

Coach: Frank Beamer (Virginia Tech and overall: 187-92-2, 23 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Bryan Stinespring Defensive Coordinators: Bud Foster

2010 Virginia Tech Players to Watch: QB Tyred Taylor, RB Ryan Williams, RB Darren Evans, RT Blake DeChristopher, DT John Graves, CB Rashad Carmichael

2010 Virginia Tech Strengths:
The offense should be ajuggernaut with the return of Taylor, Williams and Evans. Evans’ return from aknee injury that cost him 2009 gives the Hokies one of the top tailback duos in America. Taylor. who has adeep receiving corps at his disposal, improved his accuracy last year.

2010 Virginia Tech Weaknesses:
Tech’s defense doesn’t have much margin for error right away with an opener against Boise State. The Hokies will also go into the year with anew placekicker and punter. Depth is aconcern at afew positions, Including defensive tackle and safety.

2010 Virginia Tech Offense:

The Hokies have an electrifying offense that might be the best in coach Frank Beamer’s 24 seasons. Experienced, skilled players dot the field at nearly every spot, including a winning quarterback in Tyrod Taylor. Then there’s the 1-2 tailback punch of Ryan Williams and Darren Evans, which is one of the top duos in college football (Alabama has the other). While Williams and Evans ngure to share the load and terrorize opposing defenses on the ground, Taylor and a veteran receiving corps should have plenty of chances for more big plays through the air in 2010. Juniors Jarrett Boykin, Danny Coale and Dyrell Roberts teamed for 92 catches and averaged almost 20 yards per reception last season. Sophomores Xavier Boyce and Marcus Davis add quality depth to the position. The only question with the offense is the line’s left side, which lost guard Sergio Render and tackle Ed Wang. The duo combined for seven years of starting experience and were second team All-ACC picks last year. Sophomore Nick Becton is slated to replace Wang. Junior Greg Nosal, who played quite a bit as Render nursed midseason injuries in 2009, will start at left guard.

2010 Virginia Tech Defense:

The good news for Bud Foster, renowned as one of the college game’s best coordinators, is that he says this unit is as fast as any he’s coached in his years at Tech. The bad news is that a good chunk of that speed doesn’t come with experience, which has to be a discomforting thought for a coaching staff that has to prepare for Kellen Moore and Boise State in the Sept. 6 season opener. While there’s no safety net early on, the Hokies do have a couple of proven players and leaders in defensive tackle John Graves and cornerback Rashad Carmichael. But there are question marks galore throughout the starting 11, even in places where experience exists. Inside linebacker Barquell Rivers, who had 96 tackles in a solid sophomore year, might not be available at the season’s start because of a quadriceps injury.

2010 Virginia Tech Special Teams:

Chris Hazley hopes to continue a recent trend at Tech – the senior walk-on who kicks at an allconference level in his only season as a starter. Jud Dunlevy, Dustin Keys and Matt Waldron all did it in the past three years. Brian Saunders takes over at punter for Brent Bowden, a sixth-round pick of Tampa Bay. Dyrell Roberts and Jayron Hosley each returned a kickoff and punt for a touchdown last year, but the Hokies haven’t been as proficient blocking kicks in recent years.

2010 Virginia Tech Predictions:

The offense could score 500 points, but the defense is going to have to mature quickly if this team is going to win the ACC title and contend for a national championship. There’s also the little matter of a November schedule that features consecutive games against Georgia Tech, North Carolina and Miami, with the last two on the road.
