Coach: Jim Grobe (Wake Forest and overall: 59-51, 9 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Steed Lobotzke Defensive Coordinators: Brad Lambert

2010 Wake Forest Players to Watch: WR Marshall Williams. C Russell Nenon, LG Joe Looney. DE Kyle Wilber, LB Joey Ehrmann, FS Alex Frye

2010 Wake Forest Strengths:
The Deacons possess a talented trio of receivers In Marshall Williams. Devon Brown and Chris Givens. and veteran runners in Josh Adams and Brandon Pendergrass. They boast perhaps their best overall speed on defense In Grobe’s tenure.

2010 Wake Forest Weaknesses:
Wake Forest must find a quarterback to replace four-year starter Riley Skinner, who holds many of the school’s passing records. Alack of depth on the offensive line and inexperience on the defensive line are concems.

2010 Wake Forest Offense:

The strength of Wake Forest’s offense is undoubtedly its speedy trio of wide receivers. Senior Marshall Williams, junior Devon Brown and sophomore Chris Givens combined for 20 touchdowns last season. Williams was third in the ACC with 867 receiving yards; Brown was second in receptions with 61 (one more than Williams); Givens tied for the ACC lead in touchdown catches, with eight (Williams and Brown had six each). The question is, who will get them the ball? Quarterback Riley Skinner, who led the Deacons to three bowl trips in four years, is gone. Junior Skylar Jones, sophomore Ted Stachitas and redshirt freshman Brendan Cross are in a tight battle to see who claims the job. None has thrown a pass in a college game. The Deacons may look to run more with senior Josh Adams, last year’s leading rusher with 541 yards and four touchdowns, along with junior Brandon Pendergrass. Sophomore Tommy Bohanen returns at fullback. They will run behind a thin line, anchored by return starters Russell Nenon, a senior center, and Joey Looney, a junior left guard.

2010 Wake Forest Defense:

Defensive end Kyle Wilber hopes to be back to full peed after an injury-marred sophomore season. He gives the Deacons a speed rusher on one side. Another junior, Tristan Dorty, provides quickness at the other defensive end spot. In the middle, the Deacons will miss two leaders from last season’s team, Boo Robinson and John Russell. Sophomore Ramon Booi and redshirt freshman Frank Souza will try to fill those big shoes. At linebacker, sophomore Joey Ehrmann provides explosive speed and range. Veterans Matt Woodlief and and Hunter Haynes give the Deacons solid play and consistency at the other two linebacker spots. In the defensive backfIeld, senior Alex Frye can make all the plays at free safety. Cyhl Quarles, the team’s returning leading tackler, returns at strong safety. Kenny Okoro and Josh Bush will man the corners. Okoro led, the Deacons with three interceptions last season while Bush made the switch from safety.

2010 Wake Forest Special Teams:

Sophomore placekicker Jimmy Newman is already drawing comparisons to Sam Swank, the school’s all time leading scorer. Newman made 11 of 17 field goal attempts and all 34 extra point attempts last season. Popham, who was injured in the spring, did a solid job of punting in 2009, with an average of nearly 40 yards per kick.

2010 Wake Forest Predictions:

Despite its talented group of receivers, Wake Forest might lean more on its running game in 2010 after the departure of standout quarterback Skinner. The Deacons will display a new spread option package, but finding a new quarterback is the first priority. A thin offensive line must stay healthy. The Deacons will depend on a speedy defense to return to prominence in the ACC.
