2009 Record: 9-4 Big East Record: 5-2 2010 Returning Starters: 19: 9 Offense, 9 Defense, Kicker,

Coach: Bill Stewart (West Virginia and overall: 19-8, 2 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Jeff Mullen Defensive Coordinators: Jeff Casteel

2010 West Virginia Players to Watch: Noel Devine, QB Gena Smith, WR Jock Sanders, DE Julian Miller, DT Chris Neild, FS Robert Sands, CB Brandon Hogan

2010 West Virginia Strengths:
Devine is one of the game’s most explosive players. Few teams can boast the type of experience West Virginia has on each side of the ball. This could be the program’s best defense since 1988, when the school played for a national championship.

2010 West Virginia Weaknesses:
Any time you break in anew Quarterback, there are concems. If Smith can’t pass adequately or at least manage the game, the WVU offense could become one dimensional and inconsistent.

2010 West Virginia Offense:

Although the team returns nine starters, much depends on the quarterback. And there are no assurances that sophomore Geno Smith can play at a championship level. Smith earned enough time last year to throw 49 passes. He saw meaningful minutes in three games, including the Gator Bowl loss to Florida State and a midseason win over Marshall. However, Smith’s absence from spring practice – he broke a bone in his foot during offseason conditioning – opened a door for sophomore Coley White, who took advantage with a solid spring. It’s also possible that White, the brother of Mountaineer legend Pat White, could move to slot receiver if one of two freshman quarterbacks – Barry Brunetti or Jeremy Johnson – shine in preseason drills. Regardless, the basic idea will be to get the ball in Noel Devine’s hands. The senior rushed for 1,465 yards and 13 touchdowns last year despite being the focus of every defensive game plan. Devine, who boasts game-breaking speed and breathtaking cuts, also helped in the passing game with 22 receptions. Senior Jock Sanders will carry the pass-catching load again; he had 72 catches for 688 yards and three scores last season.

2010 West Virginia Defense:

With nine starters back and good depth throughout the unit, West Virginia could have the Big East’s top defense. Leading the charge in the 3-3-5 scheme is end Julian Miller, who enjoyed a breakout sophomore season with nine sacks and 14 tackles for loss. He gives the Mountaineers the edge rusher they’ve lacked in recent seasons. Defensive tackles Scooter Berry and Chris Neild offer experience and the ability to win battles at the line of .scrimmage, enabling a talented group of linebackers and safeties to make plays against the run. Senior Pat Lazear notched a team-high 78 stops in his fust year as a starter, while fellow linebacker J.T. Thomas finished at 76. Free safety Robert Sands is the dictionary definition of t’ball hawk,” using his 6-5 frame to swoop in for five interceptions and 65 tackles. Bandit safety Sidney Glover (60 tackles) has started for the past two years. Strong safety Terence Garvin will be the only true new starter on this unit.

2010 West Virginia Special Teams:

Tyler Bitancurt hit 13 of 15 field-goal attempts last season, and one of his kicks supplied the Mountaineers with a satisfying win over backyard rival Pittsburgh. Tavon Austin and Mark Rodgers combined for 44 kickoff returns and 1,045 yards, with Austin scoring on a 98-yard return. But kick coverage was poor, which has been a trend. The Mountaineers must replace Scott Kozlowski, who averaged 44.4 yards per punt.

2010 West Virginia Predictions:

The conference’s most experienced team is going to be dependent on one of the lineup’s few new faces. With a flashy running game and a stout defense, quarterback Geno Smith doesn’t have to do too much in order for West Virginia to battle for the Big East crown.
