Washington Redskins 2009 Preview, Picks, & Odds.

The Redskins had a quick start to the season led by quarterback Jason Campbell’s streak of interception-free football.

However as the season continued his progress curtailed as he threw for only 13 touchdowns on the year. The Redskins finished 28 th in the league in scoring and 19 th in yardage.

Running back Clinton Portis continued to assert himself as one of the underrated offensive studs in the league. Big plays were limited but the trio of Santana Moss, Chris Cooley and Antwaan Randle El all got their hands on a lot of balls. The defense was strong and didn’t allow many yards or points but did not produce many sacks or turnovers.

WASHINGTON REDSKINS 2009 PREVIEW

Washington has high expectations for the 2009 Redskins Season. Jim Zorn returns for his second year as the head coach and ended up running with a .500 win ratio in the ’08 season. He was initially the offensive coordinator, but after an run that received much merit from his superiors, Zorn was promoted to head coach. The ’08 season began with a 6-2 win, but tapered off as the season continued. Greg Blache, another second season coaching veteran, returns as the defensive coordinator. Injuries have stopped the defensive line from shining as they could, but players have had the entire off season to rest on the mend. Continuing with the trend in the 2009 Washington Redskins Season Preview is offensive coordinator Sherman Smith who will return for his second consecutive year with the Skins. He has been working hard with Zorn to improve overall offensive capabilities. Scott Wachenheim will be the new tight end coach for the Skins going into Washington Redskins 2009 schedule. Scott had 21 years experience at the collegiate level, so his expertise should bring a great bounty to the Skins abilities. Another new addition to the coaching staff is Chip Garber, who was named the defensive quality control coach in February of ’09. He brings 27 years coaching experience to the field and should serve to raise the bar for the Redskins.

2009 WASHINGTON REDSKINS OFFENSE:

After failing to acquire Cutler, the Redskins have stuck with Campbell to steer their ship. For once in his career he will have a consistent coaching staff in front of him, which the Redskins hope will lead to increased playmaking ability and downfield opportunities. Clinton Portis can continue to draw the defense towards the line and it will be up to the receiving corps of Moss and Randle El to make big plays. Portis takes a pounding both running the ball and providing the protection, and one has to wonder how much is left in the tank even after a superb 2008 season.

2009 WASHINGTON REDSKINS DEFENSE:

The largest move of the off season was made as soon as free agency began, as the Redskins wasted no time gobbling up Albert Haynesworth from Tennessee. They also used their first draft pick on defensive end Brian Orakpo. With the two additions to the defensive front, the team will have a much superior pass rush from last season’s. The team also hope this leads to more turnover opportunities for defensive backs LaRon Landry, Carls Rogers, DeAngelo Hall and Fred Smoot. Whether or not Hall can play at a high level and keep his emotions in check could go a long way towards either strengthening or undermining the unit.
